As our daydream continues, we find Hong Ju lying semi-conscious on the rooftop of Yu Beom’s office building. Ha Ju Wan kneels next to Hong Ju and prepares to inject her with a drug that will paralyze all the muscles in her body, effectively killing her. Hong Ju mumbles and asks Ha Ju Wan what time it is. Ha Ju Wan is amused for a moment that her victim wants to know the hour of her death. When Ha Ju Wan tells Hong Ju the time and explains what is about to happen, Hong Ju can be heard saying “Jae Chan did you hear?” Ha Ju Won injects Hong Ju with the drug and doesn’t spare a single drop. While Ju Wan is busy, Yu Beom takes a single pill from the bottle that he used to drug Hong Ju, and swallows it. Ju Wan turns to him triumphantly only to find Yu Beom with a cold murderous look on his face. He plans to kill Ju Wan since she is the only remaining person with the evidence tampering information. He also plans to blame everything on Ju Wan, painting himself as a victim and leaving him scott free. Ju Wan tries to load another syringe with the killing drug but it is too late as Yu Beom lunges towards her.
Woo Tak and his partner arrive at Yu Beom’s office tower to find all of the electricity is turned off. They locate a security guard who points them to the emergency elevator. Soon they are on the roof and find a very groggy Yu Beom trying his best to carry Hong Ju to the stairs. Woo Tak takes Hong Ju from Yu Beom and he rushes to the lobby with her on his back. There he is met by Jae Chan, who tells him to put Hong Jo down and go inform the paramedics what has happened to her. Jae Chan begins to perform CPR on Hong Ju. As he does, his memory returns to the day they saved Mr. Choi together.
Yu Beom wakes up in the hospital with two detectives standing next to his bed. He spins his story and explains that he too was drugged by Ju Wan and that he is the one responsible for the I.V. killers death. He feigns regret that he was not able to save Hong Ju. Both detectives perk up and happily inform Yu Beom that Hong Ju is not dead. Yu Beom is surprised to learn that Jae Chan was at his office building and he is the one who saved Hong Ju’s life. Yu Beom realizes that his plan is not as simple as he’d hoped. Woo Tak watches Yu Beom’s conversation with the detectives from a distance and the look on his face tells us that he knows that Yu Beom is lying.
In the ICU ward, Hong Ju’s mother and Jae Chan stand next to her bed. The doctor arrives to deliver the good news that Hong Ju is past the critical stage and should make a recovery, although, he is unsure as to when she will regain consciousness. Woo Tak meets up with Jae Chan in the hospitals waiting area and he tells Jae Chan what Yu Beom said about the incident. Both men know that he is lying. Suddenly, Mr. Choi arrives and Jae Chan demands to know why he resigned from the prosecutor’s office. Mr. Choi is silent as Jae Chan dissolves into tears and says “you are leaving me all alone”. Mr. Choi clutches Jae Chan to his chest and apologizes but offers no explanation.
A bit later on, Jae Chan and Mr. Choi sit on a bench outside the hospital. Mr. Choi tells Jae Chan that he is going to work with Yu Beom. He tells Jae Chan about his brother. When his brother would call him from his military service and complain about how he was being treated, Mr. Choi had only encouraged him to tolerate the abuse by saying that it happened to everyone and to “just endure it”. When he learned that his brother went AWOL (Away Without Leave) he blamed himself for not really listening to his brother in the past. When he learned that his brother killed his police chief (Jae Chan’s father) and other people as well (Hong Ju’s father) he had wanted to die and blamed himself for his brother’s actions. Now he has decided that he doesn’t want to pretend that he doesn’t see injustices and he doesn’t want to lie.
Mr. Choi discourages Jae Chan from going straight to Yu Beom and punching him. A rash action on Jae Chan’s part would exclude him from the investigation and legal proceedings. Mr. Choi encourages Jae Chan to suck up his anger and wait for the right time to give Yu Beom the beating he deserves. Jae Chan asks Mr. Choi how he knew that he would be at the hospital but Mr. Choi is still evasive. As the two men acknowledge their past together, in her hospital bed, Hong Ju cries a single tear and it is certain that she is dreaming about the very real converstaion that is taking place between Jae Chan and Mr. Choi.
In Mr. Park’s office, the team discusses the I.V. serial killer case. They establish that since Ju Wan is now dead, there isn’t much use in pursuing a conviction. However, evidence tampering is still on the table for Yu Beom. Meanwhile, Yu Beom is putting on a show at the local convenience store. He even kneels in front of Dae Gu and Seung Won and apologizes for convicting the wrong person in the I.V. serial killer case. All the while, the local media is standing outside the store taking photos and video of the fake apology. Yu Beom explains to Dae Gu how the real killer was at the hospital and had access to his father’s office. Dae Gu accepts the simple explanation but wonders aloud why it was so difficult to figure out then. Dae Gu asks Yu Beom to take responsibility. Yu Beom says that he’d like to but making such a mistake isn’t illegal. Yu Beom’s unrepentant attitude sends Dae Gu over the edge and he kicks Yu Beom in the chest for everyone to see. Seung Won has to peel Dae Gu off of Yu Beom.
Back at Mr. Park’s office, Jae Chan receives a text telling him that Hong Ju has finally regained consciousness. Mr. Park quickly dismisses Jae Chan with everyone’s well wishes. Mr. Park then turns his attention back to the upcoming Yu Beom trial and it seems that a Mr. Ko will be defending him. Ji Gwang acts casual about facing “another lawyer” but when he learns that Mr. Ko makes a six-figure salary, he starts to sweat just a little.
Jae Chan arrives at the ICU to find that it is not yet visiting hours. He begs a nurse to let him into the ward but she refuses. Fortunately, Hong Ju is sitting just inside the doors. The hallway is bathed in a warm light and if you didn’t know better you’d think maybe you were seeing an angel or a ghost. Jae Chan rushes to her side and runs his fingers through her hair as he asks if she is alright. She smiles at Jae Chan and assures him that she is well. He scoops her up in his arms and the pair look into each other’s eyes for a long moment.
A bit later, Jae Chan and Hong Ju wander the hospital grounds for some fresh air. Hong Ju drags her I.V. stand beside her as Jae Chan supports her. As they walk, she tells Jae Chan that while she was unconscious, she had dreams about the ongoing case and has a rough idea about the tricks that Yu Beom will try to pull. She also tells him that she dreamt of his conversation with Mr. Choi and she now knows who he is. She also admits to seeing Jae Chan crying. She reaches for his hand and lets him know that she cried with him.
At the Hae Kwang Law Firm, Mr. Choi settles into his new office. He even has new business cards that were no doubt arranged by Yu Beom. Yu Beom arrives and fills Mr. Choi in on the wonderful amenities that the new job offers. Mr. Choi appears a bit overwhelmed by such luxury and quickly changes the subject. He tells Yu Beom that Hong Ju has regained consciousness. Although he tries to hide it, it is not something that Yu Beom wanted to hear. Mr. Choi quietly takes note of Yu Beom’s reaction to the news. Mr. Ko arrives and Yu Beom quickly makes introductions.
A bit later in Yu Beom’s office, Mr. Ko prepares to go over Yu Beom’s case. When Yu Beom informs him that Hong Ju may not side with them, Mr. Ko is initially confused. He soon drops the niceties and tells Yu Beom that he needs to know everything so that he can determine if he needs to clean the situation or cover it up. Yu Beom is surprised to see another person show their reptilian skin as quickly as he does.
Hong Ju is discharged from the hospital and Jae Chan has arranged for police protection until the trial. Of course, her protectors are Woo Tak and his partner. Jae Chan and Woo Tak playfully deny making a special request to have Woo Tak look after Hong Ju. Officer Han quickly escorts Hong Ju and her mother to the squad car.
In Ji Gwang’s office, he and Jae Chan go over the upcoming case. Ji Gwang offers to make ramyun since it looks like it will be a long night. As Ji Gwang prepares the noodles, he asks Jae Chan how he can be so calm. Jae Chan admits that he isn’t calm but is aware that a rash action on his part could ruin the case. In his head, he launches himself across the table at Yu Beom and punches him squarely in the jaw. Also in his head, he sees himself being forced out of the interrogation by Mr. Park, who is very angry at his impulsive behavior.
Late into the night, Woo Tak is dreaming about the trial. He sees Mr. Choi’s questioning as well as Hong Ju’s. He also sees his own swearing in and questioning. He sees Jae Chan ask him about being unable to identify the color of an umbrella and his confession that he is colorblind. He wakes and wonders aloud what he will do since his testimony may ruin the whole trial.
In the lobby of the courthouse, Jae Chan and Ji Gwang encounter Yu Beom and Mr. Ko. Ji Gwang greets Mr. Ko warmly. Jae Chan is frigid as winter to Yu Beom and the two men do not even speak to one another. Once inside the courtroom, Mr. Ko goes down the list of charges and witness statements looking to strike as much from the record before the trial begins. He also wants to make the trial hurt, so he requests that Mr. Choi and Woo Tak are called as witnesses.
That evening, Jae Chan, Woo Tak and Hong Ju enjoy snacks outside. Hong Ju notices the background photo on Woo Tak’s phone and concludes that the two shadows in the photo belong to Woo Tak and the girl he has a crush on. Hong Ju gets a phone call from the news station and while she is taking the call, Jae Chan establishes that Hong Ju is the one that Woo Tak has a crush on. The two men decide not to make a big deal about it as they both want to keep their friendship as it is. Hong Ju returns from her phone call and the Three Dreaming Dragons pull the foil lids off of their yogurt and lick the lids together like before.
The next day, everyone prepares for the trail. Seung Won and Dae Gu sit in the gallery along with several people from the prosecutor’s office. Hong Ju finally meets Mr. Choi face to face and expresses how much she wanted to meet with him over the years. They clasp hands as Jae Chan looks on from across the courtroom.
As the trial begins, Mr. Choi is called as the first witness. The defense tries to blame Mr. Choi since he was the one who collected and cataloged the evidence. The prosecution notes that the three vials of lethal drugs were not recorded during the collection phase of the investigation but during the second cataloging of the evidence once it was returned to the office. Even the entry in the evidence book is written with a different pen. Mr. Choi is able to tell the court that when the second catalog of evidence was made, there were three people in the office, one of which was Yu Beom. When Jae Chan begins asking questions, he asks if anyone in the office received anything as a result of the case. Mr. Choi tells the court that Yu Beom had received an award as well as a promotion. As if to drive his point home, Jae Chan asks Mr. Choi if he received anything as a result of the case. Mr. Choi says that he did not.
Up next is Hong Ju, who testifies that Yu Beom is the one who carried her up to the roof as Ju Wan followed with two umbrellas. In spite of being drugged, she remembers very clearly what happened. She even remembers Yu Beom taking the pill that would make it appear that he too had been drugged. She also testifies that Yu Beom killed Ju Wan. Her testimony is explosive and damning to Yu Beom’s case. When Mr. Ko approaches the witness table, he asks Hong Ju to read an insert from the bottle of pills that was used to drug her and Yu Beom. She pauses mid-sentence when she realizes that Mr. Ko is going to try to convince the court that what she thought she saw was merely a hallucination brought on by the powerful drug. When Mr. Ko tries to discredit her testimony, Hong Ju loudly insists that she knows exactly what she saw. She throws a fierce look in Yu Beom’s direction. Jae Chan slams his hand on the desk and alerts the judge that Hong Ju was not the only person who was under the influence of the drug. He tells the court that if Hong Ju’s testimony is suspect then so is Yu Beom’s. Yu Beom and Mr. Ko were not expecting Jae Chan’s rebuttal and they do their best to hide their disappointment.
The trial breaks for lunch and the prosecution meets in Mr. Park’s office to discuss strategy. The team feels relatively confident about the remainder of the trial since they have the two umbrellas from the scene of the crime. Ju Wan and Yu Beom’s fingerprints were on the umbrellas. Mr. Park points out that the umbrellas were found on the ground floor and not on the roof. Hee Min argues that the wind must have taken them from the roof and a simple weather report should put those pieces of evidence back in good standing in the eyes of the court. To make sure, Woo Tak will be called to testify about the location of the umbrellas since he was the first to arrive on the scene.
Hong Ju finds Woo Tak in the hallway sweating through his dress blues. She gives him information about the umbrellas to memorize. She also reveals that she knows about his colorblindness. When he looks less than confident, she suggests that he should run away. She will make an excuse for him to the court. He hugs her tightly when he realizes that she is willing to sacrifice the conviction of her attempted murderer in order to save his career in the police force. He tells her that he won’t run away and promises that he won’t make any mistakes.
Court reconvenes and it is Woo Tak’s turn to take the stand. The judge warns Woo Tak that if he lies on the stand, he will be punished for perjury. Woo Tak voices his agreement and raises his right hand in preparation to take the oath.
Woo Tak finds Hong Ju at the bus stop. Jae Chan left his phone at home and had to return to retrieve it. They smile at one another while they wait for the bus. Woo Tak turns and notices their shadows on the sidewalk. It looks as though Hong Ju’s head is resting on Woo Tak’s shoulder. He takes out his phone and snaps several photos of their shadows doing what they never will. It is a stolen moment of happiness for him and in spite of his unrequited love for Hong Ju, he seems content. He smiles broadly at her and we almost wish that she had met him first.
