As our daydream continues, the magistrate searches into the night for the mermaid. During his search ,he finds his manservant at the bottom of the cliff. He is barely alive. The magistrate rushes him back to the village doctor and then resumes his search for the mermaid. At the same time the magistrate finds his manservant, the mermaid is found by the evil noble’s men.
At the village, the magistrate meets with the evil noble, who apologizes for his concubine’s behavior. He explains that she was so worried about the rumors about the mermaid that she went a little overboard with her search. The magistrate notices a bright tangerine on the table in front of him and remarks on its rarity. The evil noble smiles and says that he has expensive tastes. Expensive indeed since the evil nobles inn is the only place that they can be found in the area. The magistrate tells him that during the autopsy of the body found on the beach, tangerine had been found in the dead man’s belly. The magistrate explains how the crime was committed and then informs the evil noble that he is the one guilty of the crime. Soldiers enter the room as the evil noble proclaims his innocence.
Next, we see the evil concubine being dragged into the yard at the magistrate’s office. The magistrate demands to know where the mermaid is but the concubine feigns ignorance. The magistrate tells her that if she doesn’t know where the mermaid is then he will execute her. Only interested in saving her own skin, she eventually tells the magistrate the location of the mermaid. He finds her in a shed with a basket of perfect pearls by her side. The evil noble had done exactly as he said. She has been beaten and her tears collected. The magistrate is silent with rage. The evil concubine begins to scream that the “magistrate is bewitched by the creature that brought destruction to the village”. She then challenges him to take one step out of the shed. She is sure the villagers will not allow them to leave. The magistrate picks up the basket of pearls and flings its contents above the heads of the villagers, covering them in a shower of pearls. The greedy villagers drop to the ground to gather the precious pearls.
The magistrate apologizes to the mermaid for not finding her in time. He gathers her in his arms and carries her away from the village. As he walks, he talks to her and tells her his dream. He had dreamed that they met in the future and although he did not remember her, she was already in his heart. His voice breaks several times as he tells the story as he does his best to hold back his tears.
On the ski slope, Joon Jae and Shim Cheong lay in the snow after their fall. He tells her that he needs to confirm something and she needs to say the words “I love you” in order to have his answer. She asks him if he is surrendering and if he has lost. She has completely misunderstood his intention. She laughs and says that she was going to be the one to surrender when the first snow fell. She asks him “Are you mine?” He laughs at her mistake and she tries to remind him of their conversation about the meaning of love. He scoffs at such ideas and wants to know who told her such a thing. He asks if it was a guy and she says that it was. He then begins to call the “guy” all kinds of names and warns her that she should stay away from such a person. She suddenly says “I love you” and it freezes him in his tracks. He walks away from her, flustered and she asks if she needs to say it again.
When Joon Jae and Shim Cheong arrive home, Tae Oh and Nam Doo want to know where they have been. Joon Jae explains that Shim Cheong wanted to see snow so he took her to the ski resort. Tae Oh stares daggers at Joon Jae and then leaves the room in what appears to be a jealous fit. Joon Jae goes to his room and Nam Doo gives Shim Cheong and tangerine while asking about Joon Jae’s foul mood. Later that evening, Joon Jae cannot sleep. He calls Shim Cheong down from her loft and begins to question her about the man who gave her ramyun. He tries to warn her about pretty men and then wants to know if she told Mr. Ramyun that she loved him too. He sends her back to the loft because he isn’t getting answers he likes. She tells him that she came back to Seoul to work things out with Mr. Ramyun.
Joon Jae finally falls asleep and dreams of the magistrate’s search for the mermaid. He also sees the magistrate’s man lying wounded at the bottom of a cliff. He awakens with a start and tries to sort out his dream. He calls his father’s assistant but receives no answer.
At breakfast the next morning, Gil Joong receives a call about his assistant, Mr. Nam. He has not arrived at work, which is very unusual. Supposedly, Mr. Nam had an accident while driving drunk. We know that isn’t true. He has been attacked by Dae Young the murderer and at this point is lucky to be alive. Gil Joong has no idea that his second wife, Soo Hee is communicating with Dae Young and has instructed him to kill Joon Jae. Soo Hee suggests that they should go to the hospital to visit Mr. Nam.
At police headquarters, the lead detective holds a meeting about the Dae Young murder cases. They are mystified at how easily the culprit has slipped through their fingers. Meanwhile, our trio of conmen discusses their plan to catch Jin Joo. Shim Cheong interrupts them just as they are leaving and wants to know where they are going. They say they are going to work but Shim Cheong wants to know what kind of work. Joon Jae lies and says they are civil servants. Shim Cheong beams with pride at the job title.
Detectives roam the streets near Joon Jae’s home looking for clues to the murder in that location. Dae Young is also in the neighborhood but he is casing Joon Jae’s house. The detectives and Dae Young cross paths and a chase ensues. Fortunately, Shim Cheong has gone designer dumpster diving to find some new clothes. A block away, some classmates are bullying Shim Cheong’s little friend, Seo Yoon Ah. They give her a hard time about being an apartment kid but Yoon Ah is made of much tougher stuff and the bullying doesn’t seem to affect her much. Yoon Ah is pushed to the ground and just as her bully is about to slap her, Shim Cheong lifts the child by her collar and off of Yoon Ah.
The bully runs to her mother. She only tells half the story, which swings her mother into action. Her mother is none other than Jin Joo, the target of Joon Jae’s con job for the day. Yoon Ah and Shim Cheong sit in a convenience store and discuss the finer details of a divorced family dynamic until Jin Joo and her bully offspring call them out on the street. Shim Cheong confronts Jin Joo without fear as Jin Joo jealously observes every detail about Shim Cheong’s beauty. Shim Cheong explains that the child was bullying Yoon Ah, leaving Jin Joo no way to defend her spoiled brat.
Our conmen are thwarted in their plan for the day since Jin Joo didn’t leave when they expected. The men disperse, leaving their plan for another day. Tae Oh rides with Joon Jae. He asks how Joon Jae got started in the con game and Joon Jae remembers when he first met Nam Doo. Nam Doo tried to swindle him but Joon Jae had waited for weeks until he appeared again. Liking his tenacity, Nam Doo offered Joon Jae the chance to team up with him.
At the hospital, Nam Doo asks questions about Shim Cheong’s x-rays. She healed amazingly fast. I’m sure he will find a way to profit from her existence. It will probably be the thing that causes a rift between him and Joon Jae. Nam Doo meets with Si Ah. While they talk, she receives a phone call about the recently discovered relics and their owner, someone named Dam Ryeong.
By the river, Shim Cheong prepares to jump in to grab some lunch. A man wearing a rescue workers clothes stops her and when he touches her arm they both realize they are the same kind…mermaids. He takes her back to the stationhouse. At the stationhouse, he tells her how to collect her tears and sell them for money. They watch drama together with plastic bags hooked over their ears. It is hysterical. If I had collected mine only while watching drama…I’d be RICH!! The man also warns her that if she came ashore for love, the love must be returned or she may not be able to ever get her tail back. He offers to help her by making Joon Jae jealous.
That evening the conspiratorial mermaids arrive at Joon Jae’s house. Shim Cheong is wearing a crazy outfit that reminds me of a Devo video. They play they lovebirds in front of Joon Jae and his jealousy rages.
Gil Joong visits Mr. Nam at the hospital. Mrs. Nam is there and the two puzzle over the accident and how the behavior being attributed to Mr. Nam is very unusual. That night, Nam Doo sneaks into Joon Jae’s room and gets flipped over the bed for his trouble. Joon Jae tells Nam Doo that he will give the bracelet back to Shim Cheong when she leaves. He knows if he gives it to her now that people like Nam Doo will not leave her alone.
The next morning Shim Cheong appears in the living room in a perfectly coordinated outfit. Joon Jae tells her to change her clothes and wear her hair down. When she says that she has plans later, Joon Jae finds excused for her to remain at the house. He assigns her housework under the guise of her earning her keep.
Shim Cheong takes to her tasks once the boys leave the house. She finds herself near the pool and its glimmering surface entices her to swim. She luxuriates in the pool while she has the house all to herself. Unbeknownst to her, Joon Jae has forgotten something and has returned to the house to retrieve it. He notices the door to the pool is ajar and slowly moves forward to investigate. Shim Cheong surfaces in time to see Joon Jae’s approach.
This was a fun episode. I like it when dramas acknowledge their own hokey-ness. The drama pearl collecting scene made me laugh out loud like few things do. That mermaid tears are valuable is well known but for a mermaid to use their own tears as a means to make bank…..genius. It’s nice that another mermaid/merman appeared to show her the ropes and she doesn’t seem quite as awkward as before. Joon Jae is a goner now. With two mermaids working to make him fall in love, it’s a done deal for sure. Now if we can just find a mate for our rescue merman. Maybe a disappointed Si Ah will take to him like a fish to…. Ahhh, no I’m not gonna do that.
