As our daydream continues, we are at the end of Joon Jae’s dream of the past. He sees the death of Dam Ryeong and Se Hwa’s pain. He wakes from the dream when Se Hwa plunges the harpoon deeper and she joins Dam Ryeong in death. Tears flow from his eyes as he realizes how Dam Ryeong had tried to protect her but ultimately failed. He is also grieved to know that, in spite of a promise to recognizes her in another life, he had failed to search for her. As he tells the doctor about his dream, Dae Young eavesdrops on their conversation. The doctor suggests that perhaps the ill fate can be broken if Joon Jae sends the girl back to where she came from. Joon Jae rejects the doctor’s suggestion and steels his resolve to make things right this time.
Joon Jae rushes home to find Shim Cheong. She is not at the house and when Nam Doo cannot provide her whereabouts, Joon Jae runs into the street to look for her. He finds her in front of the crane machine still trying to get her pink octopus. He hugs her tightly as a group of fascinated children look on. She asks if he’s had the scary dream again and he tells her that he won’t dream it anymore. Out of nowhere, he asks her if there is something that she wants to do. Initially, she is a bit confused but then she remembers her homeless friend’s advice about love. She asks Joon Jae if he is making an attempt at one of the three kinds of love. Now he is the one who is confused. She explains that there are three kinds of love…Romantic Love, Hot Love and Dirty Love. He decides that Romantic Love and its trappings are what they should try first.
He takes her hand and they walk into a montage of romantic activities such as hand holding, feeding one another, playing arcade games and going to the movies. He takes her to see Titanic and she cries as Rose lets Jack’s body sink into the deep cold water. Later a woman is cleaning the theater and finds pearls strewn on the floor where they had been sitting. At coffee, they discuss the final scene between Jack and Rose. Joon Jae tries to get her to promise to live on and find happiness, as Rose did, should something happen to him. Shim Cheong refuses to promise such a thing, much to Joon Jae’s consternation. Her resistance to the idea is such that, Joon Jae stops talking to her. He won’t hold her hand in the car on the way home and she doesn’t quite understand why, just as Joon Jae does not understand why she cannot make the promise he requests of her. He does not know that without him her heart will die.
Upon arriving home, Nam Doo notices the tension between them and is sure that the relationship has reached its limit, as many others before. Joon Jae’s habit seems to be ending the relationship at three months or before. Shim Cheong is not happy with this information and she drags her coat across Nam Doo’s face as she heads to her bedroom. Meanwhile, Joon Jae is talking to Tae Oh. He is given instructions to increase the security around the house and to make it so that Joon Jae can monitor the premises.
Dae Young visits the psychiatrist and tells him that he overheard Joon Jae’s dream. He feels that he wants to see then end of his dreams as well. The doctor puts him under and he dreams of himself as the evil mermaid hunter. His eyes snap open and he says, “It wasn’t me who killed them”. The doctor asks the obvious question and we are left to wonder about the answer.
Chi Hyeon is dressed in a smart suit and his hair is combed to the side. He looks quite different than the bowl cut son of a real estate developer. He leads a group of me to a large boardroom. Once inside, he takes his father’s place at the head of the table and tells the gathered businessmen that he is taking over operations of his father’s company while his father takes a vacation and visits some friends. He invites anyone who feels they cannot work under him to leave immediately. No one moves.
Chi Hyeon visits his father in the hospital. Il Joong’s eyesight is bad and he almost cannot make out the face of his stepson. Chi Hyeon asks his father a few questions and then tells him that surgery for his eyes will be difficult at this point. Il Joong asks if he was able to contact Joon Jae and of course Chi Hyeon lies and says that he tried. Il Joong asks him to try again and Chi Hyeon says that he will even though we know that he won’t. At least not to tell Joon Jae about his father’s condition.
Joon Jae and Shim Cheong are still not talking to each other when he arrives home to find her watching Kung Fu movies and eating snacks. In her mind, she complains excessively about Joon Jae, who hears every word. He confronts her and she is surprised at his seeming ability to guess what is on her mind. Nam Doo comes into the room and Joon Jae immediately employs him to keep an eye on Shim Cheong for the day. She refuses so adamantly that he finally caves in and tells her to do whatever she wants.
Joon Jae visits Mr. Nam in the hospital and apologizes for being absent for so long. He tells him a story that he is sure that Mr. Nam will find strange. He tells him that they have known each other for a very long time and that Mr. Nam was someone who looked after him in that relationship too. Joon Jae then shows him a photo of Dae Young and says that if he is the man who caused his accident, he should blink two times. Mr. Nam silently looks at the photo and then carefully blinks twice. Chi Hyeon enters the room and Joon Jae decides to meet with him outside.
Chi Hyeon is practically itching to tell Joon Jae that his father has willed everything to him and his mother. He pretends that he tried to stop Joon Jae’s father several times but he refused. Joon Jae asks Chi Hyeon to stop giving him reasons to hate his father, he can do just fine all by himself. Chi Hyeon then asks about Shim Cheong and it stops Joon Jae in his tracks.
Si Ah is home in bed still freaking out that she has been so awful to Joon Jae’s mother. Yoo Ran brings her some soup to make her feel better but Si Ah is mortified that Yoo Ran would do any additional work on her behalf. Yoo Ran moves to leave and Si Ah gives her an awkward and desperate back hug. Yoo Ran is stunned and a bit confused by Si Ah’s sudden change in attitude towards her.
Yoo Ran finds Jin Joo in the living room and is going to ask her what is wrong with Si Ah. She overhears Jin Joo complaining about Seo Hee. She asks about Seo Hee’s stepson and Jin Joo begins to run at the mouth about Seo Hee’s stepson and how he ran away and now everything is going to go to Seo Hee’s child instead of Il Joong’s.
Yoo Ran takes a taxi to Seo Hee’s home. When she arrives, she remembers the day that she moved out of her house and Seo Hee moved in with her son. Seo Hee had promised to look after Joon Jae and to treat him as her own child. Seo Hee had also recommended that Yoo Ran not visit the house so that Joon Jae could grow accustomed to his new family. Yoo Ran rings the bell and Seo Hee allows her inside. She offers Yoo Ran a seat but she does not accept the offer. Yoo Ran asks Seo Hee where Joon Jae is and Seo Hee tells her that he ran away. She tells Yoo Ran that she assumed that she and Joon Jae had kept in contact this whole time. She chastises her for staying away from her son at her recommendation. Yoo Ran promises that she will return Joon Jae back to his rightful place and she also promises Seo Hee that she will put her back where she belongs as well. Yoo Ran also reveals Seo Hee’s real name, Kang Ji Yeon. Seo Hee bristles at the name.
Outside, Yoo Ran slowly walks away from the house in a bit of a daze. She is almost struck by a car when out of nowhere Shim Cheong appears and pulls her out of the car’s path. Yoo Ran is delighted to see Shim Cheong and the two women decide to go to the market together. The car that almost ran over Yoo Ran has looped back around and its driver is now rolling down the window to look in the direction of the two women. Suddenly, someone with a camera phone steps between the driver and the women and begins to snap photos. The driver takes off as sweet Tae Oh snaps picture after picture. He smiles and then remembers what Joon Jae had asked of him. “Keep on eye on her and don’t get caught!”
Tae Oh follows the women to the market and sends photos of Shim Chong to Joon Jae. Joon Jae looks at the photos while he waits for the detective to return to his desk with some more information on the Dae Young case. When the detective returns, Joon Jae remembers the detectives face from his dream. Joon Jae looks at the papers provided by the detective and finds a name he recognizes. The doctor’s name matches his own doctor. Joon Jae and the detective visit his doctor and when he is asked about Dae Young he lies and says that he hasn’t seen him.
Shim Cheong walks Yoo Ran home. She is surprised to find herself in front of Si Ah’s house but that is not as she remembers the location. She remembers it as the location of the con. She puts two and two together and realizes that is why Joon Jae was so upset after that dinner. Tae Oh watches the two women until Shim Cheong walks away. He is about to follow Shim Cheong when he is stopped by Si Ah. She believes that he is taking photos of her gate because he still has a wicked crush on her. He tries to explain but she won’t hear him and he is forced to run away from her and after Shim Cheong.
Back at the doctor’s office, Joon Jae and the detective prepare to leave. Joon Jae tells the detective to go ahead of him. He returns to the office to have a private word with the doctor. The doctor tells him the truth about Dae Young and also what Dae Young saw in his dream. The doctor encourages Joon Jae to send the girl away. Joon Jae receives a message from Tae Oh letting him know that he was not able to keep the tail on Shim Cheong.
Chi Hyeon sits at an empty restaurant table when a phone on the table rings. It is Shim Cheong’s phone. He silences the ringer and then turns the phone off completely just before Shim Cheong returns to the table. Shim Cheong eats happily not knowing Chi Hyeon’s true nature.
Dae Young sits in his rat hole of a hotel room and remembers his dream. He cannot see the face of the one who threw the fatal harpoon.
Joon Jae returns home to find Chi Hyeon and Shim Cheong chatting on the stoop. He quickly takes her hand and drags her inside the house and away from his devious stepbrother. Once inside the house, Nam Doo finds out that Shim Cheong has been introduced to Joon Jae’s stepbrother. It is an introduction that he has not had the privilege of receiving. Shim Cheong goes upstairs to bed and just as she is climbing the steps she clutches her heart. She thinks to herself about what could be wrong. It is an internal conversation that Joon Jae easily overhears. She wonders if perhaps her absence from the water is what is causing her pain.
The next day Joon Jae decides that everyone should leave the house but Shim Cheong should remain home. It is his way of giving her access to the pool without fear of being discovered. Joon Jae shoos everyone out of the house. Shim Cheong immediately goes to the pool and indulges in a delightful dip in the water. Nam Doo is indignant about being forced out into the cold and he decides to go back into the house. Nam Doo finds Shim Cheong in the pool. As he approaches her, he accidentally kicks the pool lounge and hurts his toe. His gaze travels to the water and he sees Shim Cheong’s silvery tail. At first, he thinks she is a mermaid but then decides that she must be trying out a costume for a new job at the aquarium. His eyes soon convince him of his first assessment and he is almost stunned to silence. Shim Cheong asks for the dressing gown and when he turns around he is surprised to find that she has legs. He begins to ask her rapid-fire questions and his true con man/opportunist comes flying out of its cage. He orders her to cry and Shim Cheong looks confused. She asks him not to tell Joon Jae but he is so focused on future piles of money that he can’t see her trepidation. She asks if he will sell her and he says that he is merely talking about a job for her. She smiles sweetly and offers her hand in agreement of his proposal. As soon as she touches him he gets a confused look on his face and begins to wander out of the pool area, once again smashing his toe into the pool lounge. Shim Cheong wonders what Joon Jae’s reaction would be and laments that she didn’t ask Nam Doo before she erased his memory. She decides to recreate the situation where he once again smashes his toe and then sees her tail. He asks all of the same questions and more this time. She asks him what Joon Jae’s reaction would be and he basically tells her that he would freak out. Having received her answer she takes his hand once again and erases their most recent encounter.
At dinner, Nam Doo is still super confused. He comments on the nagging feeling and then suddenly has a flash of memory and points to the pool. Joon Jae smacks him in the back of the head to stop his memory in its tracks. All the while, Joon Jae can hear Shim Cheong’s thoughts. She wonders if she did a good job of erasing his memory.
After dinner, Joon Jae pulls Shim Cheong into the patio room and asks her again why she cannot make the promise to live well and be happy should something happen to Joon Jae. She thinks of all of the reasons and Joon Jae hears them all, clear as a bell. He realizes that without him she will die anyway. It is what keeps her from making the promise. If Joon Jae dies her heart will turn to stone and will stop beating. It is not her choice. It is just how a mermaid’s heart works.
Great episode!! Tension filled with some answers given and some new questions. I like the pacing so far and there are few scenes throughout that feel like time filler. I’ve noticed that some dramas have throwaway episodes, where the story is not advanced and it seems like the entire episode could be skipped and the audience would not really notice. This drama hasn’t had one of those yet and for that I am grateful.
We are being shown almost everyone’s true colors now. There has been some shady characters in previous episodes but this one is getting to the grit of most of the characters. Nam Doo has always been a con man but for a while, we were led to believe that he shared Joon Jae’s heart of gold. In this episode, we find out that it isn’t so and I wonder if perhaps he and not Chi Hyeon, as the cutaway might indicate, is the one who threw the fatal harpoon at our doomed lovers of the past. There’s something crazy about his eyes when money is involved and it is clearly his motivation.
Let’s talk about Tae Oh. Does anyone else get the feeling that maybe he can also hear Shim Cheong’s thoughts? They say that it’s the quiet ones you have to worry about. Maybe behind his Bambi eyes and his adorable red ears, there is a telepath. Perhaps that is why he is always so quiet. He is listening to everything and everyone. And then, of course, there is this………………………
