As our daydream continues, we find Ki Hyung and Hyun Joon carefully walking into a café. They scan the room until they find who they are looking for. They approach a table with a man sitting alone drinking coffee, a large leather duffel bag sits on the floor next to his chair. The man turns to Ki Hyung and complains that he is late. So late, in fact, that he’s already had two cups of coffee. The man is Kim Yong Chul, otherwise known as The Reaper. Hyun Joon wastes no time and asks Yong Chul where Chief Baek can be found. Yong Chul prefers formalities and invites the two men to sit down as he takes a disgusting slurp from his cup of coffee. After all, he is certain that they have many things they want to hear from him. It is evident that Hyun Joon is sickened by Yong Chul’s casual attitude and he warns him not to do anything stupid. Yong Chul smiles and tells Ki Hyung that his “pet” is noisy. Hyun Joon assures Yong Chul that he will not be able to walk out of the cafe. Yong Chul’s amusement continues and he offers to make a bet with Hyun Joon that he will do exactly that. His arrogance is more than Hyun Joon is willing to tolerate and he aggressively steps towards Yong Chul. Instead of watching Hyun Joon beat Yong Chul to a bloody pulp we see Ki Hyung quickly place a hand on Hyun Joon’s arm, effectively stopping him. Ki Hyung, instead, sits down across from the man who killed his wife. After taking another sickening gulp of coffee, Yong Chul asks a few obvious questions. “Do you think I’m crazy?” and “Why do you think I’m like this?” Ki Hyung unpacks a story of an abused child who eventually murders his own parents. Yong Chul finishes the story and explains that the child was then moved to a mental institution where he was subjected to more abuse, causing him to repeat his crime and burn the hospital down. Ki Hyung offers that he understands Yong Chul’s pain but adds that he does not know what real pain is like because he is unable to feel anything at all. Yong Chul slightly gestures towards the bag on the floor as he tells Ki Hyung that Chief Baek understood him but unfortunately, he is the type that pushes his luck. Whatever that means.
Outside, the café is surrounded by police and S.W.A.T. team units. Back inside the café, Yong Chul reaches for the large leather duffel bag and places it on the table in front of him. He declares once again that he will walk out of the café on his own. He then asks if Ki Hyung and Hyun Joon are curious about the contents of the duffel. He smiles and says that what is inside the duffel is his ticket out of the cafe. He takes one more repulsive swig from his coffee cup as Hyun Joon moves forward towards the bag. Hyun Joon grasps the zipper pull and begins to open the bag. He hesitates as his hand trembles against his will. His mind shudders to think what horror could possibly lie within.
Now we flash back almost three weeks earlier. Ki Hyung meets with Chief Baek. They briefly discuss Sun Woo and her three-month suspension from NCI since the rapist shooting. Cheif Baek expresses relief that local police were on the scene when the shooting happened and could verify that Sun Woo acted in self-defense. He suggests that NCI should hold a Q&A for the public in order to better clarify what it is that NCI does and what their function in law enforcement serves. Public sentiment has been negative recently and opinions seem to suggest that the citizens are not happy with the rate at which murder cases have been solved by the NCI team. Ki Hyung, Lee Han and Hyun Joon are tasked with the lectures and they do their best to explain things in layman’s terms so the general public will understand them more clearly. During the question and answer period, an audience member asks if a profiler and a criminal are two sides of the same coin since the profilers are called to think like the criminals as a means to solve their crimes. Ki Hyung agrees with the audience member and explains that one must know where the line is and not to cross it. A profiler is meant to uphold the law and justice. Next, a smartass kid asks why the team has not captured The Reaper since they must surely know what he is thinking. He also asks if they know why The Reaper stopped killing after he escaped prison. Ki Hyung is not at liberty to answer the question since the case is still ongoing. After the lecture, a young woman asks Ki Hyung to autograph one of his books. Hyun Joon asks her where she got the book since it is an out of print edition. Ki Hyung asks the young woman’s name and she tells him that she is “Future Profiler, Ko Joon Hee.” He signs her book and wishes her good luck. In a bold move, she asks Ki Hyung for his business card and he obliges.
Back at NCI headquarters, the girls mope about while missing Sun Woo. They decide to take a photo of Na Hwang to send to her. They are sure it will cheer her up. A bit later in the evening, we follow Ko Joon Hee as she walks home from the lecture. She accidentally shoulders into a man who is limping down the alleyway, causing him to drop his armload of fruit. She apologizes and continues on her way but just a few steps later, guilt gets the better of her and she turns back to help the limping man. She gathers his fruit and returns it to him. In return, he hits her with a jolt from a taser gun. She falls to the ground, where he gathers her up and runs away with her unconscious form. The next day, Ki Hyung is called to the crime scene of a murdered young woman. He asks her name and is stunned to learn that she is the student from the day before. Hyun Joon informs him that the young woman’s parents received a video of their daughter being tortured. This crime resembles the Song Yoo Kyung case. The manner that she was kidnapped and the video are signatures NCI has seen before. Ki Hyung arranges to meet with Ko Joon Hee’s mother.
Ki Hyung and Hyun Joon arrive at Joon Hee’s to meet with her mother. Ki Hyung asks if the location where Joon Hee’s body was found has any significance to her. Joon Hee’s mother explains that there was once a house on the property but it was torn down soon after they moved out. It is where Joon Hee was born and on occasion, mother and daughter would visit the empty lot together and remember happy family times. Hyung Joon conducts a brief search of Joon Hee’s room and finds a few photographs hidden in the pages of a book. Hyun Joon admits to Ki Hyung that he is bothered that the murdered girl attended their lecture just prior to her death.
Back at NCI headquarters, the team discusses copycat criminals. The copycat often sees themselves on the same level as the criminal they are copying and idolize the original criminal and his crime bordering on fandom. We also learn that this copycat criminal knew about an unpublicized signature. Leaving the body in a place that was significant to both the victim and her mother had not been revealed. Later, Min Young and Lee Han go to a bookstore to attend a book signing by Son Suk Ju, the reporter that spoke exclusively with Kim Yong Chul. Min Young remarks on Suk Ju’s surprising public event since he was previously in hiding after Yong Chul escaped from prison. An announcement comes over the bookstore PA system. The book signing has been canceled due to “personal reasons” by the author.
Sun Woo sits in a café, pouring over a book. Within its pages, she has circled the word “me” numerous times. Hyun Joon arrives and gently knocks on the table as if knocking on a library door. He sits down at the table and smiles warmly at Sun Woo who’s brow is still furrowed in concentration. He asks if she is alright and reminds her that he told her to go on vacation. She asks him about the lecture and he tells her about the kid who asked the Reaper question. “If you can think like a psychopath, why can’t you catch The Reaper?” Little smartass!! Sun Woo asks about the copycat murder and Hyun Joon gives her the details. Sun Woo talks about Son Suk Ju and explains that he might be gone for good. Even his publisher doesn’t know where he is. Hyun Joon gently says Sun Woo’s name but then thinks better of what he was going to say. He dismisses it as nothing and offers her a comforting smile.
Late at night, a car drives along a deserted roadway. Just as the car is about to pass the only parked vehicle in sight, the seemingly parked car suddenly turns into the path of the other car. The woman stops short of an accident and rolls down her window to yell at the driver of the offending van. She pulls her car around the van and continues on her way. Soon, however, the van is right next to her and seems to want to trade paint with her. She rolls down her window again and begins yelling at the driver of the van once more. Suddenly, she is looking down the barrel of a shotgun. The blast wounds her and she pulls off of the main road to call 911. Soon a man is standing next to her driver’s side window offering to call an ambulance. His kindness only lasts for a moment and once again she is staring death in the face. The man fires two blasts into the vehicle before he casually walks to his van and drives away. This murder is a carbon copy of one that we have already seen.
At NCI headquarters, the team talks about the details of the most recent murder and it is exactly like the Jang Gi Tae shotgun murders. Chief Baek arrives and warns the team that if the public finds out that two copycat murders for cases that NCI solved have happened in the last two weeks, it could cause a problem for them. He offers to support the team to the best of his ability. Next, we are shown some computer nerd munching on “Bugles” while he uploads crime scene photos to a website called “The Reaper”.
At the most recent shotgun murder, the boys take note of all the similarities between the Jang Gi Tae murders and this one. Lee Han finds a necklace wrapped around the victim’s wrist. The necklace belongs to Joon Hee, the victim from the murder a week prior. Now the killer is passing on an item from the previous victim to his most recent victim. The signature of The Reaper. Hyun Joon goes to the medical examiner and finds that a button was missing from Kang Ho Young’s jeans. Hyun Joon calls Lee Han and asks him to find the evidence box for Joon Hee. Lee Han digs through the box while another detective assures him that there is not a button in it. Lee Han almost immediately proves him wrong when he finds a blue jean button in Joon Hee’s backpack. Min Young and Na Hwang verify that the necklace did belong to Joon Hee. In his office, Ki Hyung reviews Reaper case files and comes across a large photo of his wife’s earring. His gaze moves from the evidence photo to the framed picture of his family sitting on the desk. He remembers shopping with his wife and walking in the park with his family. He also remembers weeping bitterly as he held his wife’s murdered body. Ki Hyung reaches for a bottle of pills in his desk drawer and he flips the cap open. Ki Hyung pauses and looks at the bottle in his hand and it appears that he wants to close the bottle without removing a pill.
We see our computer nerd looking at crime scene photos on a website called “The Phantom Club”. Crime scene photos cover the walls around his computer monitors. At NCI headquarters, Na Hwang rushes out of the building as she is heading for an appointment. At a café, Sun Woo continues to scrutinize her book. She remembers speaking to an expert about the book, who insisted that the text was written by two different people. In the midst of her memory, Na Hwang arrives as if she is the heroine of a spy novel. She confesses to being nervous whenever they have one of their clandestine meetings. She removes her glasses and sits down with Sun Woo. She explains that she has been researching secret online fan clubs. She goes over all of the different ways the clubs limit access to their sites and how she managed to get through. She shows Sun Woo “The Reaper” fansite and then admits that she has not been able to break into the last layer of protection around it. Just then, Lee Han arrives and surprises both women with some unexpected information. He believes he has found the answer to the last password challenge for the site. Using IP numbers and books written by the Reaper, Lee Han breaks the code and helps the girls gain access to the last password challenge.
Back at NCI headquarters Ki Hyung, Min Young and Hyun Joon brainstorm about the copycat case. Lee Han and Na Hwang enter the conference room looking sheepish and soon we learn why. Sun Woo is with them. Ki Hyung reminds her that she is suspended but Hyun Joon says that arresting the Reaper is more important. Sun Woo promises to be careful as she sits down to tell the team what she knows. Na Hwang shows the team the secret fan club site and Sun Woo explains that the murders are being announced in advance to these clubs.
Ki Hyung tells Na Hwang to continually check the site and as she does a “fan fiction” is uploaded to the site. As Hyun Joon reads the story, we hear a description very similar to the priest’s murder in the church. Unfortunately, as Hyun Joon reads, the actual crime is being committed. The man is attacked from behind at the church but he resists and manages to briefly escape with a few cuts to his arms. He runs out of the church and into an alley where he finds a man waiting. He begs for help but the man holds his arms while his pursuer cuts his throat. Once he is on the ground, a knife is shoved in his ear and the blade is broken off. The killer places a black blindfold over his eyes and then leaves the scene.
At the crime scene, Ki Hyung and Hyun Joon arrive to a crush of reporters. They push past the reporters and underneath the crime scene tape. Ki Hyung notices that the crime scene doesn’t match the story’s original location. Hyun Joon notices the man’s defensive wounds and concludes that the victim struggled, forcing the story to change. A local detective arrives and gives Hyun Joon an evidence bag containing a pair of glasses. Hyun Joon recognizes them as those worn by Son Suk Ju, the Reaper’s reporter. At Na Hwang’s workstation, she and Sun Woo find another website frequented by criminal psychology majors. The “Mystery World” website is often referenced on the “Reaper” site.
Lee Han and Sun Woo go to a local newspaper office to inquire about certain advertisements that provide coded clues to the murders. The newspaper can’t provide much information since the advertiser wished to remain anonymous.
At the crime scene, Ki Hyung calls Na Hwang and asks for the CCTV footage from the day of the lecture and for the current crime scene. His phone then rings with an unavailable number. Ki Hyung and Hyun Joon exchange concerned glances before Ki Hyung answers the phone. It is Yong Chul, who has called to taunt Ki Hyung. As Yong Chul chats with Ki Hyung he watches a pretty woman window shopping. He promises that he will surprise Ki Hyung before hanging up the phone and turning his evil eyes towards the unaware woman.
Ki Hyung and Hyun Joon return to NCI headquarters where Na Hwang informs them that she has found three possible suspects. Ki Hyung asks Hyun Joon to gather the team. Meanwhile, Yong Chul is placing a plastic bag in a freezer while the pretty woman in the other room struggles to free herself from the chair that she is tied to. As the NCI team complies their cases, another fan fiction is uploaded to the “Phantom Club” website.
We are shown a pretty girl standing on a street corner. She takes a call and identifies herself as the woman who called yesterday. She confirms that she can see the caller sitting in his car across the street. At NCI the team talks about the test drive case and how items for sale were used to lure young women to their deaths. The fan fiction pinpoints the time of the murder around 3:50 pm, giving the team a little under three hours to decipher the location that the crime will take place. Lee Han realizes that the writer is using an anagram to provide the location and the team is able to narrow the down their target to three places. The team deploys as quickly as they can to stop the next murder.
Hyun Joon and Sun Woo sit in a car across the street from one of the possible cafes. Back at NCI, Lee Han discovers that Ki Joon Hee was the administrator of one of the mystery club sites. The team cross-references club members with attendees at the NCI lecture the day of Joon Hee’s murder. They find Kang Chi Hwan, the questioning smart ass from the lecture. He was also discharged from the army for mental illness. He currently administers the “Phantom Club” website with Shin Hye Mi.
Hyun Joon and Sun Woo decide to take their search on foot just as the killer receives word that he and his accomplice have been discovered. As Hyun Joon and Sun Woo walk towards the cafe they do not see the young man with the ball cap following them. He turns away from the detectives and goes to the pretty young girl standing on the corner. He introduces himself as the person selling the camera and apologizes for being late. When the girl asks where the camera is, he explains that he left it in the car along with a few accessories. He offers to give the girl a ride home after she views the camera. She agrees and foolishly follows him to his car. Hyun Joon catches a glimpse of the killer and then receives a photo of him from Na Hwang. Hyun Joon chases after Kang Chi Hwan while Sun Woo calls backup. Unfortunately, Hyun Joon is too late. The girl is already in the car and Kang Chi Hwan is driving away. He doesn’t get far when undercover police vehicle box him in.
Hyun Joon catches up just ask Chi Hwan has pulled the girl from the vehicle and now holds her hostage with a knife at her throat. Hyun Joon pulls his gun and orders Chi Hwan to drop the knife so that they can talk. Chi Hwan smiles and cryptically says “We’re not to that stage yet”, as he backs into the nearby cafe with his hostage. Unbeknownst to our detectives, Yong Chul is watching the entire scene play out. Sun Woo arrives and for a split second, she thinks she sees Yong Chul. In the cafe, Chi Hwan screams at Hyun Joon to put down his gun. Hyun Joon agrees and once again puts his firearm on the ground and holds up his hands. He calmly asks Chi Hwan to let the girl go so that they can talk. Chi Hwan grins like a demon and brings the knife closer to the terrified girl’s throat. “Don’t try to trick me.” Hyun Joon screams “NO!!” as he realizes he has made a terrible mistake.
